Ugh. LOL 😉

This will NOT succeed.

(Also -- Zappa said Mickey's book helped him get his chords up to snuff. So props are in order. More ugh. 😆)

Hey, I said that! I have mixed feelings about not learning much of the single note exercises, but I was introduced to THE book when I was 15 or 16. Kids right?

I learned what little music theory mostly from playing trumpet and baritone horn when I was a kid, studied a little bit to read bass clef 10-15 years ago. Always too lazy to learn to sight read well.

I tell students that the staff (and really, written notation in general) and the guitar aren't great friends...you want to learn to extract the needed information from the page and run away...

Nobody in my old old band could read music or had any formal training other than some piano lessons at very early ages.

Everything was just by ear... But my brother learned trombone through school and never learned to improvise...

2 different paths is all.

@tgraph52 @Charles_Hawtrey @CanisPundit @InUnfunky @Bix @evamarie @Mfieck @JoyfullyDazed @CinnamonGirlE @codeWhisperer @jdtasker Single-line instruments with limited alternative note positions and keyboards are quite fine with the page (even bass guitar), and formal training needn't be an impediment to improvisation, depending on how you're taught - after all, improvisation was considered a core skill in Bach's day...it's a failing for that to have fallen aside.

My musical heroes didn’t recreate their records live, they played in the moment. And I rather hear someone’s interpretation of a song than a replication. The Beatles tribute band 1964 did maybe still does an amazing replication right down to nuances, but I only needed to hear them once.

His ear training was excellent and his traditional jazz band transcribed every part listening to 78s, etc... but improvising was never a part of his path. That band was all these 20 somethings in their tuxes, back then, playing very cool jazz from the 20s and 30s, note for note.

Ooh - arch YouTubers cock an eyebrow and say, "if there's no improvisation, is is jazz?"
(I ain't one to judge, but give me Tuba Skinny...)

The Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra's deal was recreating that music as it had been recorded.. It was fun to hear but an very narrow focus.

Starting playing git in’83 (9th grade), had lessons ‘84-‘85 (scales and chords) but couldn’t read. Then in ‘94ish I started jamming with 2 Eastman grads so I kinda needed to up my game…so I taught myself to read. Best thing I EVER did. Now reading standards (primarily jazz and showtunes, believe it or not) for practice is what I do.
