What *is* surprising is this: the incident took place 100 km inside separatist territory, and only 13 km from the Russian border. TL:DR - These are insurgency tactics by the Ukrainians against Russians. They're successfully executed and they can take place anywhere in Russian-occupied territory.
They're really going to lose this war.
