Is it appropriate for a court appointed defense lawyer to ask their client for more money so they'll "work harder" on the case?

That might actually be a crime in some states. Definitely report that to the state bar AND to the court that appointed the attorney.
@sleepingbearcat AFAIK it's not a crime, but it is a professional responsibility violation and worth reporting to the state bar association.
But it's been years since I took the MPRE and it's never come up since because I wouldn't dream of doing it, so take that with a grain of salt.
I would recommend reporting it, though.
