Today, they'd be figuring out how little fabric they could use to hold the flour and have the sacks sewn by 10 year olds in Bangladesh.

@sfleetucker Today flour sacks are made with paper because it's cheaper.

Also, this was a marketing ploy: to get enough of one pattern to make a dress you had to buy several sacks of flour. Patterns were limited issue as well, so you had to buy it now.
