Is it just me or are so many commercials these days, (watching a show on ad-filled Hulu), extremely pointless?

I just watched a commercial for New Balance shoes, which wasn't evident until the very last 2-3 seconds. The whole commercial was nothing more than several young kiddos just dancing around in a studio.

I've been seeing commercials like this a lot lately and it makes absolutely no sense to me.

@see_the_sus Agree. It's made me think several times that I'll remember the ad, but not the product. It's also similar to 15 second or skippable Youtube ads that also don't show the product much, or maybe AFTER people have skipped the commercial.

@CIWS_35

I may remember the ad but whats the point if I don't remember who the company is?

@see_the_sus not just you, they're all like this now and not obvious until the end

@insomniacviolin

I normally don't pay a lot of attention to commercials but as I was here on my 'puter I realized the commercial wasn't ending and so I started watching and kept waiting and waiting. I ended up just being annoyed.

@see_the_sus

I don't watch TV, Netflix, or Hulu (or Apple TV), so I don't really know, but it does seem the trend is to make commercials look less like ads and more like short-form videos now; I suspect part of this is the popularity of TikTok, Instagram, and other similar services, and part of it is folks' 60 second attention span; if something doesn't happen in short order, we don't pay attention to it. It's like the entire nation has ADHD all of a sudden.

@XaoslordErie

How the hell do they make money from advertising this way?

@see_the_sus

As long as there's a cool video and some kind of product placement that grabs attention for a second, people will, unfortunately, pretty much buy what they're told to. Less and less do we think for ourselves in this society; those of us still capable of independent thought are becoming more and more unhappy with the status quo. Why, indeed, would I want food with Cardi B.'s name attached to it? Blech.

@XaoslordErie

I found the commercial, I missed the very beginning and it did have the NB logo.

The funny thing is, and this goes to show that I am most definitely NOT their target audience, not once did I look at their feet. 🤣 I guess if I had I would have realized the shoes were colorful.

Mostly what I saw were silly facial expressions and lame choreography. 🤷

@see_the_sus

And you hit upon a good point there - that being that you (and by extension, I) are NOT the target demographic.

@see_the_sus Makes you wonder what they'll switch to when that approach stops working. (If it's even working now?)

Once in a blue moon I'll see an ad that goes, "Hey, this is our product, this is what sets us apart from competitors, and this is how you can buy it," and it's so refreshing I almost feel compelled to buy just to reward them. Still don't, though - screw forced advertising. :-)

@tyote

Now I'm imagining a commercial that's nothing more than a person or persons staring blankly into the camera while white noise plays. At the end, there's a bright flash. Every commercial is like this except that the flash is a different color for the brand.

@see_the_sus Ha, don't give them ideas. Though that does sound less obnoxious than a lot of stuff I see. Anything to keep them distracted from figuring out how to beam ads straight into our dreams, lmao.

@tyote

😂 good point!

Ugh, the whole idea of implants, beaming ads into my brain, those google glass eyeglasses... 🤢
