Hmm--comcast is telling me they have "upgraded my speed" but to take advantage, I need to buy a new cable modem.

I do not trust these people. Anybody know if this is e.g., a lure to get me to agree to some new pricing or data limits or whatever?

@rpardee
My guess is that your current modem is DOCSIS 3.0 and to get the speed you'll need a 4.0 modem?

You can probably find a Surfboard DOCSIS 4.0 on Amazon? And the settings from them or somewhere on the webz?

@InvaderGzim ah--thanks! I can confirm current modem is DOCSIS 3. It's been running fine for 6 years now.

I suppose if I do upgrade the modem, my router might become a bottleneck. That's pretty long in the tooth also...

@InvaderGzim I think my existing setup is pretty good--these are good speeds, aren't they?

@rpardee
Mine is luckily fiber through my local mom and pop phone company. Got very lucky when they put fiber in my neighborhood.

This was wifi to my phone... It's 500/250 at the router next to their box...

@InvaderGzim zounds. We have 'dark fiber' in my town here, but getting our housing development wired up to it would be muy expensive, so nobody's done it...
