The shooter was 20, registered R and would have voted in his first presidential election this year. When he was 17, he donated $15 to ActBlue. What? I regret that my first reaction to hearing about the shooting was "inside job". I am confused now. But this dead kid will be hard to spin into a crazy left-wing plot. MAGA will try, though.

Well, my loves, it is time to dust off an old hashtag of mine because we may be sliding into #AmericanAuthoritarianism in new ways. But I also want to offer a note of #hope because as a 50-something who grew up in the dying days of the Eastern Block, I know it is possible to have intellectual freedom and joy and love in dictatorship. It is fucking hard but it is possible and a litmus test of who your people really are. And democracy does return.
