Optimists are generally supposed to be cheerful and happy.

But if you're really convinced that everything happens for the best, then anything bad that happens to you feels like a personal insult, and everything good is run-of-the-mill, no more than you deserve.

But if you're a pessimist, everything bad that happens to you is exactly what you expected, while everything good is like this amazing, unexpected birthday present, all the more valuable because you don't expect it to last long.

@DavidSalo imo true optimism aint pie in the sky. it is a sense of surety regardless of outcome.
the basis of all creativity, miracle and magic.
even a trip to the store requires assurance of arrival.

@pennyphilosophy

Good for you! Personally, when I go to the store, I'm always wondering if I'm going to get hit by a car. It hasn't happened so far, but I put that down in part to the fact that I'm always keeping an eye out for the possibility... :D

@DavidSalo confidence works as well, envisioning safe arrival is less stressful.
optimism + observation = opportunity
cheers!
