June 1, 1966~ Approximately 2,400 persons attended White House Conference on Civil Rights. The aim of the conference was built on the momentum of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in addressing discrimination against African-Americans. The four areas of discussion were housing, economic security, education, and the administration of justice.

June 2, 1863 ~ Abolitionist and βUnderground Railroad Conductorβ Harriet Tubman leads a force of Union Army guerrilla soldiers into Maryland and frees more than 700 slaves. Tubman was one of the most noteworthy women in the anti-slavery struggle prior to the Civil War and became a leading voice in the call for the federal government to allow Blacks to fight in the war.

June 3, 1937 ~ The GOAT, according to latest MLB statistics, and Negro League Legend Josh Gibson hits a home run just 2 feet below the rim of Yankee Stadium (580' drive).

June 4, 1972 ~ College professor and activist Angela Davis is acquitted of charges that she assisted and conspired with the young men involved in a deadly 1970 shootout at the Marin County courthouse in CA in an attempt to free imprisoned Black activist George Jackson.
At least three people were killed and Davis spent 16 months in prison but on this day she was found not guilty of all charges by an all-White San Jose, Calif., jury.

June 5, 1973 ~ Doris A. Davis of Compton, California became the first female African American Mayor of a major metropolitan city in the United States. However, after four years as mayor she did not seek re-election.

June 6, 1971 ~ MLB Legend Willie Mays hits record 22nd (& last) extra inning HR.
Mays spent the majority of his MLB career as a center fielder with the New York and San Francisco Giants. He won two MVP awards and played in 24 All-Star Games. Growing opinion states that he was possibly the greatest all-around baseball player of all-time.

June 7, 1958 ~ American songwriter and impresario Berry Gordy Jr. founds Tamla Records, precursor to Motown Records, in Detroit, Michigan.

June 10, 1972 ~ Sammy Davis Jr.'s cover of "The Candy Man" by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse (from the film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory") goes to #1 on the charts - his biggest single.

June 11, 1963 ~ President JFK declares that segregation was βmorally wrongβ and told the U.S. Congress it was βtime to actβ (pass legislation) to end all segregation of the races.
That statement and similar ones endeared Kennedy to millions of African-Americans. However, a few months after making the declaration, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX. But his vision lived on through LBJ's Civil Rights Act.

June 13, 2000 ~ Samuel L. Jackson is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his significant contributions to the film industry.

June 15, 1921 ~ Bessie Coleman becomes the first woman of any race to obtain an international pilotβs license. But she had to leave the United States and study in France in order to accomplish her goal. She was barred from U.S. flight schools because of her race and her sex.

June 16, 1957 ~ Tuskegee boycott began. Blacks boycotted city stores in protest against act of state legislature which deprived them of municipal votes by placing their homes outside city limits.
AL state senator Sam Engelhardt sponsored Act 140, which proposed to change the Tuskegee City boundaries from a square into a 28 sided shape that included every one of the 600 white voters and excluded all but 5 of the 400 black voters.

June 14, 1970 ~ Cheryl Adrienne Brown wins the Miss Iowa pageant becoming the first black Miss Iowa and the first African American to compete in the Miss America beauty pageant.
