Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the cityβs council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour.
Lyft called the ordinance βdeeply flawed,β saying in a statement that it supports a minimum earning standard for drivers but not the one passed by the council.
@nursefrombirth Greedy bastards! So a bunch of people lose their income because companies pick up their ball and run away in a fit of pique.
@stueytheround Quite sad isn't it? You would think they said they had to pay them a million. Don't seem to care much about the drivers.
@nursefrombirth Gig work is often very close to wage slavery.
Stories like this should be so heavily plastered all over American news, that greedy companies become afraid of being greedy in public.
@nursefrombirth
A victory for #democracy and for the government oversight of loss-leader monopolies (Uber has never turned a profit, not for one second) trying to drive down wages and customer service...

Minneapolis just called Uberβs bluff β other cities must follow their lead
This month, a group of mostly Black and immigrant Uber and Lyft drivers in Minneapolis won their fight for a minimum pay rate when the Minneapolis City Council refused to be bullied by the rideshare corporations.
