The REAL Civil War:

Here's what the founding documents of the Confederacy had to say about the cause of the American Civil War

The Civil War has always been a contentious part of US history, and part of why it keeps coming up is that nobody can agree on what it was actually about. While most schools in the North teach that it was because of slavery, many schools in the South claim that it was about states' rights and government.

This continues to be a problem as the country navigates the significance of Confederate flags and memorials, as well as when race is discussed moving forward.

Looking at contemporary sources, it is clear what the cause of the Civil War is. In Abraham Lincoln's words, "One section of our country believes slavery is right and ought to be extended, while the other believes it is wrong and ought not to be extended. This is the only substantial dispute."

A better way to look at the issue is by reading the Confederacy's own documentation. The Civil War was prompted by the creation of the Confederate States, so what caused that separation? πŸ€”

The helpful thing when it comes to the Confederacy is that the states that left the Union announced precisely why they left. These reasons are included in their Declarations of Secession, as well as other founding documents. Therefore, there is no need to guess what they were thinking.

South Carolina Declaration of Secession (1860)

"An increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations.

A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery.

Georgia Declaration of Secession (1861)

"The people of Georgia, having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery. "

Mississippi Declaration of Secession (1861)

"In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world."

Texas Declaration of Secession (1861)

"She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as n***o slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. "

Other Declarations of Secession

While eleven states and one territory chose to secede, only a few went to the trouble of detailing why they chose to leave. Most of the seceding states gave little to no explanation.

*Alabama, which was the fourth state to secede, only wrote that it was in response to the election of Abraham Lincoln.

*Virginia kept their reasoning brief, only stating, "the Federal Government having perverted said powers not only to the injury of the people of Virginia, but to the oppression of the Southern slave-holding States."

A new reason for secession came after the beginning of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln referred to the previous secessions as a rebellion and sent forces to defeat them on April 15, 1861. This gave states like Arkansas an excuse for secession because, "to longer submit to such rule, or remain in the old Union of the United States, would be disgraceful and ruinous to the State of Arkansas."

States like Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina simply announced their secession with no reasoning given. However, given that these were slaveholding states and all came after the secession of South Carolina, it can be assumed that they held similar positions.

That's all for now. Don't forget to check out the article. These are the Basics. The Civil War was ALL about slavery and NOTHING else.

@nursefrombirth

I'll contend that slavery's being the instigating cause of the Civil War doesn't actually come as news to a single person, not even one as dumb as Mike Sternovich or Candace Owens.

This is nothing more than a bunch of sea-lions, playing at being dumber than rocks.

@nursefrombirth I'm thinking someone should forward this this info to Nimarata Randhawa. πŸ€”

@SSNBubblehead Nikki knows, she's just pretending to be ignorant as to the cause of the Civil War.

@nursefrombirth I'm sure she does. And I'm also certain that she's doing world class pandering to racists who would never vote for her in the first place. She could have separated herself from the pack. Instead, she chose to join it.

Excellent article, and and the perfect approach to cut straight through the bullshit and get the truth straight from the enslavers' own words, @nursefrombirth
