The traditional staple crop of the Taíno people in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean was cassava (yuca), not corn. The Taínos were expert cassava farmers, and this starchy root was central to their diet. They also grew other crops like sweet potatoes, beans, squash, and peppers. While they may have been familiar with maize (corn), it was not as central to their diet as cassava.
