The story I think Eelon wants people to believe is something like this: "I'm just this sane, sensible centrist guy, who's worked with Democrats and Republicans; I just got driven to the right when I saw how EXTREME the liberals had become! Really any sane sensible centrist would have done the same."
There's somebody to believe every story, so I guess this is plausible to some folks; but aren't they mostly ones who were already on the far right? How does this help him?
