A massive sinkhole suddenly emerged in the heart of an Illinois soccer field.
Why does the field look like some kind of fake turf? Yet, some areas look like dead grass.

That sinkhole was caused by mine subsidence. LOTS of coal mines in southern IL. We had a hockey rink with multiple sheets of ice close because the concrete under the rink cracked due to this. Took them years to fix.
