A warm breeze comes through the window with a scent that I can only describe as "summer".

These are the inner "thoughts" that you have that are evidence of your consciousness. Unfortunately, there is no way to detect them using an external sensor. We can detect the electrical pulses and oxygen and bloodflow, etc. But we cannot confirm that they create specific thoughts.

That's your consciousness.
And, nobody can prove that you have it.

So, we may never prove that AI has become conscious.

Software development is akin to being a rabbit.

You go down a hole because you have to.

Then you find another hole in the hole.

Then another in that one.

Eventually you wonder WTF am I doing this for and how many other holes do I need to crawl out of to start making progress again.

Then I drink a martini and watch Youtube videos to calm down.

Then this happened:

If someone tells you that software developers are soon going to be obsolete, ask them "Are you currently developing using AI to enhance your coding and configuring procedures?"

If the answer is "no", tell them they don't know anything about the subject.

AI-enhanced software engineers are going to accelerate the building of all of the capabilities that were hindered by human-only skills.

And, capitalism can be a brutal sport.
Making hard and cruel decisions to make a business more successful comes easier to the amoral person. Running the business still requires intelligence.

If you encounter an intelligent person:
Do not assume that they are also a moral person.

Brutality and intelligence are not always mutually exclusive. Some of the most brutal people in history have been quite insightful and eloquent.

Those who choose not to consider the second and third-order consequences of their action before they act will always find a way to justify their action after they see the consequences unfold.
