I guess we're going to restart the cycle of :
1. Outrage
2. Blame
3. Despondency
4. Resignation
5. Disgust
6. Forget
7. Repeat
IMHO, more than half of America is emotionally stunted and has no empathy.
They will never be part of the solution because they cannot comprehend that there is a problem.
That's the problem that needs to be fixed before sensible gun regulation is implemented.

But my assumption that most of America is emotionally stunted would also support that they have an uncontrolled fear reflex.
If they cannot control their fears, they reach out for solutions.
Guns are their solution.
@jurban I think it's simpler than that - people in many parts of the country have been conditioned guns = safety for generations. They have all the empathy of the rest of us, but we're telling them what they know as safety isn't safety. De-conditioning is so much harder.
