Steve Kornacki did a good job yesterday showing the value of a country’s hosting the Olympics regarding the increase of their usual medal tally. But one thing I’d like to know: Has any country actually made a profit from hosting them? Is the cost worth the prestige? Gotta admit, though, the venue in Paris this year, using world-famous landmarks as backdrops, was spectacular.
@Patti1120 That was my feeling too. It’s a money-loser, but still, what is pride worth?
@johnldeboer I’ve heard before the host country never make a profit
@johnldeboer 1984 L.A. Olympics made a profit of $215M. https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/economics-hosting-olympic-games#:~:text=That%2C%20combined%20with%20a%20sharp,a%20%24215%20million%20operating%20surplus.
@Victor And we’re up next!
@johnldeboer o do not believe hosting cities get a boost after it’s over. I believe a few other countries are still in the hole for when they won. I mean I could be wrong but I think there was a story reported about this very topic.
