Recently on Threads I’ve had conversations with people who say they are English teachers — yet they had no idea what a gerund is. Another conversation was with a person unsure when to use a comma before “and” (I’m still not sure if that person was more confused with a series {i.e. the Oxford comma} or with conjunctions used in compound sentences).

Now this — tonight on Threads: “I’m 40 years old. I’m well educated, widely read and speak five languages. I do not know what an adverb is.”

@Route10 Grammar isn't taught that much, I don't think. I had some experience with teaching it in high school but that certainly wasn't a focus. For my degree, I think I had to take 6 credit hours, maybe? I took more, all the way through transformational but yeah, not knowing an adverb is a little off, especially if they know languages. Maybe they're trained by ear? 🤔

@SaltyVeruca Yes, that is what surprised me — I would think someone who knows so many languages would know what an adverb is & how one functions.
