Rhapsody etymology

It comes from two Greek roots: “rhaptein” meaning “to sew or stitch together” and “aidein” meaning “to sing.” Thus, a “rhapsodos,” to the ancient Greeks, was someone who stitched songs together, or more specifically, recited selections of epic poetry like the works of Homer. An uninterrupted recitation of this kind was called a “rhapsoidia.
