I think they've been normal forever, and I thought the understanding was that companies treat employees like office supplies and tokens, and they'll discard them without regard if it helps maximize profit or further some other selfish end.

Who still thought/thinks being laid off should carry some stigma. Like it's the sin of the worker rather than the employer?
