In 1998, DEC was acquired by Compaq, and in 2001, Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard. The DEC line, including the VAX/VMS system, was discontinued and faded from the market.

@estherschindler I worked for DEC a couple of years in the latter part of the 90's, so knew a lot of this history. VAX/VMS was way ahead of its time. Thanks for the link to this article.
