Reason number fiftyleven to hope for and work for a Ukranian victory. I can't imagine Russian soldiers caring the slightest bit if they found a valuable archaeological site in the Ukraine, even if they consider it to be Russia.

@rthstew I disagree... or at least I hope I have reason to do so.

Those soldiers are people too. Like soldiers everywhere and everywhen, I expect that most of them don't want to be there. And most would care about this -- even if their system/regime doesn't support it.

@estherschindler @rthstew

if you look at the history of and their antics in WW2 under Stalin, there is absolutely no reasonable explanation for that hope, unfortunately.

@estherschindler
I take your points.
I was focusing on their actions as soldiers, not who they are at home, or on their true selves. It would take a lot to convince me that men who do or don't want to be there, are badly supported and maybe badly trained, and losing on the battlefield, could get any support to stop digging in order to protect archaeological sites on land they recently occupied, or to spend time digging up the pottery to send home. Gold or jewels would be a different story.

Also, I should apologize for diverting a conversation about a cool find and remarkable efforts to preserve it into politics and military attitudes.
That was impulsive and I should have started a different thread instead.
