This is the full version of the theme used since the early 80s in the Channel 4 News (πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§) intro. Its title is β€œBest Endeavours” and it has been composed by Alan Hawkshaw (1937-2021)

@elleci42a I liked that! Only a couple of times I expected the melody to go one way and it went the other way. That tripped me up.

@researchbuzz This theme at first wasn't made specifically for Channel 4 News and it was just library music. The head of music of Channel 4 of the time had the chance to listen to the theme and liked it. After that he asked to Mr. Hawkshaw to add a fanfare, which is the piccolo trumpet you can hear in the track

@elleci42a I would like it a lot less without the piccolo trumpet. That gives it some structure. Otherwise it's just kind of aggressive percussion!

@researchbuzz I totally agree with you. From 1984 to 1987 Best Endeavours has been also used by Australian Broadcasting Corporation* news and current affairs programme ABC The National as their theme

*It's called ABC like the American one but they're unrelated because the Aussie ABC has been established by the Australian Government in 1932 and along with SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) they are the Australia public broadcasters

@elleci42a You know, I index a lot of articles from the Australian ABC, unfortunately their national archives have had funding problems for years and it's finally coming to a head.

I always denote it as ABC (Australia) because otherwise the headlines look really weird! πŸ˜†

@researchbuzz Wise move to denote the Aussie ABC in the way you do otherwise people could think that the USA ABC has a branch in the Down Under too lol

@elleci42a I have been criticized for over-explaining about things when I think it's not clear, but I'd rather overexplain than people be confused. Also not everyone has the same level of knowledge, right? The world is big.

@researchbuzz Yeah, I think it's better being a bit prolix with explain things that might generate confusion than leaving people scratching their heads

@elleci42a This is giving me a terrible case of the giggles and I had to pause.

One of the first anchors gets to say "Hello good evening" but the other anchors barely get to open their mouths. As soon as they do, the video cuts to the next person and it started striking me as really funny πŸ˜‚

@researchbuzz 😁. Well, the assembling of the video has the only one to be blamed

@researchbuzz In fact I wanted to show you this video to show you how β€œBest Endeavours” is still today the Channel 4 News theme

@elleci42a I suspect that theme is iconic at this point. If they tried to get rid of it there would be a LOT of pushback...

@researchbuzz It is and the fact Channel 4 only made slight adjustments to it means that they never planned to scrap it after 41 years
