Iridium is the original satellite phone system, sending its first satellite in to orbit in 1997. It completed a refresh of its network of 75 spacecraft in 2019.

@ecksmc I worked at Iridium in ‘98, and what was offered was an exciting prospect.
The original offering was pathetically researched (especially market-wise) and executed. Top-down failure, as it was what I refer to as the most expensive startup failure ever. And the CEO (ex-Motorola) was a jackass.

The sat network has been well-ish utilized over the following years, but no one ever really ran with it to its full potential.

Hopefully this next round will bring that to fruition.
