Those funky cheese smells allow microbes to 'talk' to and feed each other.

VOCs don't just contribute to the sensory experience of cheese, but also provide a way for fungi to communicate with and "feed" bacteria in the cheese microbiome.

The researchers found that the fungi caused responses in the bacteria ranging from strong stimulation to strong inhibition.

How To Break the Covid Doom Loop
By Anne Williamson

What we are doing simply isn’t working. There have been countless individual sacrifices; relatives not seen since Christmas and restaurants shuttered forever. As cases spiral alarmingly again, we are moving back towards economically devastating restrictions or, worse, thousands more patients struggling to breathe in intensive care units.

How a 14th-century bridge in Prague was built.

I watched this thinking "wow, that's a lot more complicated and elaborate than I thought it would be." It took them 45 years. Forthcoming repairs will take another 20.

The New York Times Editorial Board:

Opinion
End Our National Crisis
The Case Against Donald Trump

The editorial board does not lightly indict a duly elected president. During Mr. Trump’s term, we have called out his racism and his xenophobia. We have critiqued his vandalism of the postwar consensus, a system of alliances and relationships around the globe that cost a great many lives to establish and maintain.

I Was Homeschooled Until College: Here’s What To Expect.
By Mordechai Levy-Eichel

talk to your kids about what they want, and what works for them. Many educational systems fall into disrepute because of how poor they are at soliciting, engaging and stimulating student interest. After all, how many of them get to choose the books they read, or what science they pursue? Ask your kids what interests them, and be sure to do so repeatedly.

Analyzing the Design of Unusual Japanese Butter Tableware.
By Rain Noe

You probably noticed that funky knife in the photos of the Yoshikawa Case above. If you saw it out of context, you'd probably not know what it was:
The angle in the handle is a function of the slab form factor of European/Japanese butter. The little holes are to extrude separate noodles of butter, which (the Japanese find) are easier to spread.

Japan Just Launched Its First “Big Whale” Lithium-Ion Battery Powered Submarine.

Japan is preparing to introduce an innovative new class of diesel-electric submarine.
By Thomas Newdick

Whether this type of battery propulsion finds a place on other navies’ submarines remains to be seen, but it’s clear that they are here to stay, with the undersea force, at least, now well on its way to a lithium-ion-powered future.

If Layendecker’s assessment is accurate, it may be time for NASA to lose its squeamishness—or for some of the current crop of space billionaires to help fund Layendecker’s proposed Astrosexological Research Institute.

The Trouble with Disparity
By Walter Benn Michaels & Adolph Reed, Jr.

"What makes racism look like the problem? The very real racial disparities visible in American life. And what makes antiracism look like the solution? Two plausible but false beliefs: that racial disparities can in fact be eliminated by antiracism and that, if they could be, their elimination would make the U.S. a more equal society."

Extending epistemic innocence beyond belief

Chris Letheby finds another exciting application for epistemic innocence. His fascinating research is on altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic drugs such as LSD.
... although psychedelic states have epistemic risks, they also have considerable epistemic benefits. Epistemic innocence teaches us that we should reject simple trade offs between wellbeing and knowledge

In Google Chrome's "Cookies and site data" settings, accessible via the Preferences menu item or directly with chrome://settings/cookies in the address bar, you can enable the setting "Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome". However, I've discovered that Chrome exempts Google's own sites, such as Search and YouTube, from this setting.
