Oh void, I'm such a sucker for these shows, especially the tearjerker moments. They're *SO* good at that!!!

Oh, I'm pretty sure that's just a technique the sound designers use. They do that a lot on AGT, bc it heightens the viewer sense of drama. A couple of interviews I've watched noted it explicitly, w/ remarks like "the audience didn't go quiet, they never stopped making noise," and "oh, they edited that to seem like it was silent and then a slow clap, but that didn't really happen, it's good editing."
