hey there, questions to Sys Admins or DBA's.

I've got me VM's installed on a VDI on an SSD. This one is for testing and learning.

Questions for RAID and backups.

What type of storage solutions are folks running their SQL databases on? SSD Raid, or Super fast HDD with large capacity?

@RandomUsr My company runs databases on standard RAIDs, spinny platters and all. You can RAID SSD too, sort of - to protect against loosing a drive, though SSD is more reliable than magnetic. But if your stuff is already in a VM, just make sure you back up that VM regularly.

@chakaal Right. I was just curious about practical use of SSD's for VM, because it's expensive, and I'm not familiar with failure rates.

@RandomUsr Failure rates are way down, but I guess it depends on your budget and data requirements. I'm a dinosaur still not keeping much in "The Cloud" since I don't trust those melonfarmers.

@chakaal I was thinking about using MemSQL with critical data written to NVME SSD's, like Optane.

Good to know that failure rates are down.
