I don't know that that's so much of a volte-face as it is a simple lie.
As a propagandist, perhaps seeing himself as the Goebbels of the present age, his goal is not so much to present a coherent alternative reality as to tell lie after lie, with no attempt at consistency, until people stop believing that there is such a thing as the truth.

@DavidSalo @th3j35t3r I think these guys (Bannon, Miller, Musk, Stone, Trump, etc) studied Karl Rove, Nixon, Roy Cohn. Lie incessantly, never admit wrongdoing or failure. Disarms polite people, befuddles the press, deranges political discourse.
