The President is not currently restricted to legal precedent and the distinction of understanding/official is up to lower courts. Lots of time for Alito to cool it.

In actual fact, an order to the military to assassinate an American citizen running for President violates so many laws that I'd need a thread to list them.
And the military has a DUTY to refuse illegal orders, no matter from WHOM they emanate.
