On Cory Doctorow's recommendation, I read Moonbase by Robin Sloane. I prefer more science-based SF, but this story introduced interesting concepts like distributed intelligence robots, brain augments based on genetically modified fungi, the idea of humans dispersing their DNA into other life-forms to preserve the DNA in case humans got wiped out, and a world constructed with the help of LLMs ("language machines".)
Here's Cory's review: pluralistic.net/2024/06/11/pen

@peterquirk "brain augments based on genetically modified fungi" is in my very worst nightmare. *breathes into paper bag*

@b4cks4w Think of it as the mycelium that connects many trees in the forest, but this one is enhanced with silicon circuitry to add recording and recall capabilities, along with a sentience that turns it into a companion. It is an inner voice.

@peterquirk That doesn't help. Look I am freaking afraid of fungi. Did you read Finch/Ambergris? Good grief.

@peterquirk :) I grow them. I'm being dramatic (but seriously Vandemeer is terrifying).

@b4cks4w I confess I grow them in my shower stall too. 😉 It's a constant battle to get rid of them.
