Time of the day, for sure, especially for streets, Not so much for museums. Year, idnk, perhaps when it's crazy hot ;-)
Tourists (on average) are afraid from getting lost so they stick to the main st. And oh, poor souls, they even eat there ;-) They also want to 'accomplish' objectives' , so they are on a 'mission'. But, if you have time to wander and to get lost, small alleys open up and miraculous impromptu itineraries will take you to charming little places.
Sounds lovely. I don't mind taking back ways. I like this explanation. So Rome might just be part of my Italy trip :)
