@Xiomaro i see it often on acorns. i haven't sprouted too many chestnuts, but i'd guess they do a similar thing. i do have a few chestnuts i should get started though...
@Xiomaro sometimes the exposed parts of a sprouting nut will turn red... not usually *that* red, but it's possible.
