67 years ago tonight, the USSR launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, into orbit around Earth.

In Russian, Sputnik's official name was "simplest satellite." ("Sputnik" is Russian for satellite.) It did nothing but go beep-beep. The beeping transmission was to prove to the world that it was really there. (2/x)
