20 years ago today, Hurricane Frances did a number on east-central Florida. suffered significant damage, including about 800 panels blown off the Vehicle Assembly Building, and the building where the Shuttle orbiter tiles were manufactured.

This is NASA raw footage from after Frances left.

Yeah, that was a bad month for Brevardians on so many levels. Multiple hurricanes ripped us a new one.

My beloved maternal grandpa passed as Frances tore through. It was quite the feat that all eight of his kids and their families managed to assemble and have a proper service between storms.

@fugitive247 I'm sorry to hear about your loss, especially during a natural disaster.

We moved here in 2009, so we've yet to experience three hurricanes in six weeks. 😱 😱 😱

@WordsmithFL

Thank you. Pop-pop had been receiving palliative care for a bit, so it wasn't unexpected. The timing, however, was surreal-- almost bizarre even. National Guard was already deployed throughout the county, given all the damage. Troops stationed on US1 did a fantastic job of ensuring our funeral procession from Melbourne to Rockledge went smoothly. After 2005, though, I was so done with Florida hurricane seasons. No mas! No mas!
