@MLClark I've always said that, if I spoke neither English nor Russian, the latter would be easier because (1) it's a building block language, and (2) most words sound exactly like they're spelled.
People are intimidated by Cyrillic. It took me about two weeks to learn the alphabet. After that, it was a matter of learning the grammar rules.
My high school English teacher enjoyed showing us how fish could be spelled "ghoti" sue to the quirks of English phonics.
