We've started a tradition in this house to do a Saturday Movie Matinee.
The movies so far ...
Shakespeare in Love
Good Night and Good Luck
Solo
Ed Wood
Last Action Hero
The Maltese Falcon
Mamma Mia!
The Hunt for Red October
Citizen Kane
Backdraft
Damn Yankees
Get Smart (2008)
Today's movie was ...
Great Expectations (1946)
... which has Sir Alec Guinness in a supporting role. It was his first acting appearance for director Sir David Lean.
@WordsmithFL He is so wonderful as Pocket. You can see the unique quality he brings to the role. I love your idea of a movie matinee!
@elbutterfield It's not every Saturday -- we were out of town last weekend -- but most Saturdays. It's a good way to force a time out and spend time together.
Our DVD library is vast enough that we can do this for many years.
@elbutterfield This was the first Saturday Movie Matinee that wasn't from our DVD shelf. I downloaded it from online because I wanted to watch the first Lean/Guinness collaboration.
@elbutterfield We watched it on our smart TV. It was good enough for me. π I don't recall where I downloaded it; that was months ago. Plenty versions are out there on YouTube and elsewhere.
Maybe Archive.org, maybe Vimeo.com, they look about the same.
@WordsmithFL I really appreciate the organizations that recover and restore the old black and white films like the Film Foundation and Film Noir. To be able to see these old films in their original quality - or even improved images and sound. What a treat!
@elbutterfield Criterion is the gold standard, in my opinion.
@WordsmithFL Wonderful! Was the quality good?
