We've started a tradition in this house to do a Saturday Movie Matinee.

The movies so far ...

Shakespeare in Love
Good Night and Good Luck
Solo
Ed Wood
Last Action Hero
The Maltese Falcon
Mamma Mia!
The Hunt for Red October
Citizen Kane
Backdraft
Damn Yankees
Get Smart (2008)

Today's movie was ...

Great Expectations (1946)

... which has Sir Alec Guinness in a supporting role. It was his first acting appearance for director Sir David Lean.

@WordsmithFL He is so wonderful as Pocket. You can see the unique quality he brings to the role. I love your idea of a movie matinee!

@elbutterfield BTW, if not aware, Lean got the idea for the movie by seeing a 1939 stage play that had been written by Alec Guinness. It's a pity that he didn't ask Sir Alec to write the screenplay, although he did cast him in a supporting role.

@WordsmithFL Ahhh, I didn't know that. Isn't it wonderful that we have such an amazing film record of their genius?

@elbutterfield According to Sir Alec's Wiki page, he played Pocket in the stage play he wrote. Lean hired him to reprise the role in the film.
