From : House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says the House will vote today on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) resolution to oust the speaker.

McCarthy said he won't cut a deal with Democrats to stay in office.

@KGinKS To be honest, though, I wouldn't mind seeing Gaetz lose 434-1.

@KGinKS @WordsmithFL As many asked during the Iran Iraq war, can't they somehow both lose? They can.

First, McCarthy removed. First ballot to reappoint him fails. 2-20 fail to elect Gaetz and various others of the loon caucus. Ballots 21-30 fail to elect what passes for moderates in the GOP. Ballot 31 elects Hakeem Jeffries.

@WordsmithFL She's right that my big hope, a center coalition, wouldn't work. What's in it for the Democrats.

I'd like to believe Dems would put country over party, voters would understand, and elect more Dems and moderate Rs. But no, right wing propaganda would savage them, Dems get no credit, and Rs get primaried away. And Dems would lose center votes as moderates mistakenly conclude Rs are capable of governing.
😥

@walterbays If we had a parliamentary legislative system, we would build coalitions, but that would require a constitutional convention and I really don't want to open that can of worms.

@WordsmithFL Ranked choice voting would reward negotiation, compromise, and coalitions, rather than the bitter partisanship of the most extreme we have today where shutting down government and starving children and veterans is politically preferable to working cooperatively with a member of the other party.

And though today nearly all the extremist nut jobs are in the GOP, the Dems are not somehow immune to the problem tomorrow.
