Is this traditional text message or Imessage? since traditional text doesn't need a human reply. They will check if they get a DLR (Delivery Report) from the network unfortunately. Replying add an extra flag. No protection possible against this and most of those numbers are fake/created anyway.

nvm i didn't click/saw the image. then yes, just receiving the message is enough for them.
