"Helene roared ashore Florida’s coast in late September 2024 as a Category 4 hurricane. But arguably the worst-hit area was hundreds of miles north, across the southern Appalachian Mountains. A deluge of rainfall over a 4-day period, September 25 through September 28, 2024, turned trickling creeks into roaring rivers.
