9 AM, Saturday, September 8, 123 years ago this morning, the storm that would be known as #The1900Storm or the #GalvestonHurricane was a Category 4, just offshore and hours away from landfall. No one knew it was coming.
"Galvestonians had no idea of the monster lurking in the Gulf."
@Ellico2020bis Read all the SRA units at Topeka Lutheran years ago; most of the library as well.
Didn't learn about the 1900 Hurricane until Meteorology 105 at KU years later. Likewise, the New Madrid Fault Zone.
@WDEFAustenOnek Yeah I got through all the SRAs, but they started me on them when I was 6. I went to a small conference once at K State but never been to KU. Always thought weather was cool. Never took a meteo course, by the time I was an upperclassman (physics), I was in a small research university with no such department (although I'm sure some "small research Us" specialize in it, as mine had its departments/disciplines for which it was known/revered).
