Looking to the future: If #Ukraine wins the war with Russia, they will end up as the most militarily powerful state in Eastern Europe, with a powerful army that (since the Russian threat will still be there) they will want to keep. As such, I think most of Europe would want such an army *inside* NATO, as there's no telling long-term what Ukraine might do outside of an alliance; and for similar reasons a sane Russia (if that's available) would likely want that too.

In other words, a powerful Ukraine inside NATO would be a predictable force, whereas a powerful Ukraine outside NATO might end up doing who knows what, which is neither in Russia's nor NATO's interest.
