This may sound as an unfunny slanderous joke but I have it first hand from my Russian contacts: conscripts in Putin’s army are forced to buy clothing and equipment when they are sent to war in Ukraine. Families pool in their savings, many people take loans for that purpose.

It’s insane, but it’s true.

They obey slavishly.
