to initiate a new convo (message someone 1st from their profile page) you tap the 3Bars at the upper left, from that menu tap “mention”, their handle appears then proceed to message them (or mention them, whichever)

To make it a direct message to that person, in the text box that appears, down at bottom left there’s an icon to add a pic, and a word to it’s right;
Probably “public” by default. Tap that word and a menu appears where you can select “direct” or another option, select your choice, then type and “toot” (send) 😀 done
