One guy managed to stop his car only a couple of feet before plunging over.
There were 8 vehicles including a bus that went in, and a total of 35 fatalities.
Only one person who went into the water survived, his car was on the section of bridge when it fell.
He said later that his first instinct when the bridge started to fall was to step on the brakes as hard as he could.

I'm reading a book that mentioned the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse in Florida, so I just had to look it up.
It happened in 1980, a barge got off course in the fog and ran into one of the uprights. Immediately a 1200' section of the bridge collapsed, taking along several cars that were on it.
One guy driving saw the lights at the top of the bridge fall, so stopped and started backing up, and was trying to stop other vehicles, but some passed and fell into the water 150 feet below.

95% of the time, when there's an economic or societal fubar in this country, you can trace its roots back to some idiot with too much money and not enough human decency promoting some version of "let the market work". "Let the market work" has only ever done one thing consistently. Make the rich richer, and fuck everyone else.
It's worth noting that, when you get to the end of the article, the author starts promoting some sort of free market utopia as the answer. As if deregulation of everything in sight and rampant unregulated capitalism isn't exactly what created this cluster-fuck to start with, so I think more than a grain of salt is called for here. More like a 40lb bag.
