Question for the audiophiles.
I currently have a very inexpensive entry level turntable and I'm considering upgrading to a direct drive unit.
Is brand new better than bargain hunting for a refurbished older/vintage unit?
I ask because there is a shop nearby with a Sony PS-X5 Direct Drive Turntable *
Steel Plinth * Ortofon OM10 Cartridge for $350. Or a brand new Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BK Direct-Drive for $279-$329?
If you’re in a decent size urban market, you’ll get much more bang for your buck with a used table. You might consider a belt drive table, too—Orbit has a nice table with a good arm and decent cart for $250.00 USD (Orbit Basic). Spend an extra Franklin and get a better cartridge, and you’ll be very happy.
Between the two you listed, i’d go with the A-T.

What makes you say the A-T over the Sony. I'm leaning that way anyway but would be interested in your input.
To me it's brand new and also has new technology like Bluetooth.
I think AT has more and better experience at cartridge technology than Sony. They used to have a high end line called Signet that was an outstanding value. Sony is OK at electronics, but they have a really good PR department.
The AT looks like a good value..and if you do want to improve its sound now or later, you can put a better cart on it.
@northernbassist Thank you for your input. I tend to research a lot before buying myself something like this. I am now looking at the Music Hall MMF 1.5 turntable labs has.
That's a good value from a good manufacturer. can i ask what amp you'll be plugging into?
@northernbassist I haven't gotten that far. Initially I'll just use the pre-amp like I'm doing now to a decent bookshelf speaker.
