Moser's design was produced in various colorways by the Viennese company Johann Backhausen und SΓΆhne, a close collaborator of the WerkstΓ€tte, which continues to operate today. The textile was intended for use in upholstery or curtains, complementing rooms designed as cohesive artistic environments by WerkstΓ€tte artists.
Koloman Moser was a leading Viennese designer who co-founded the Wiener WerkstΓ€tte (1903β1932), an avant-garde design workshop in Vienna. Before 1903, he played a crucial role in the Moderne Movement. Moser was also a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of young artists who had parted ways with the established Wiener KΓΌnstlerhaus, the dominant art institution of the time.
What is the cause of this unusual parabolic structure? This illuminated cavity, known as LDN 1471, was created by a newly forming star, seen as the bright source at the peak of the parabola. This protostar is experiencing a stellar outflow which is then interacting with the surrounding material in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, causing it to brighten. We see only one side of the cavity -- the other side is hidden by dark dust.

Herman Hollerith dies of a heart attack at age 69. Hollerith's experience before he was 30 -- at the US Census Bureau and US Patent Office and as instructor in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- set the stage for inventing the successful card system for the 1890 census.
