The Lantern Man
It was Halloween night, and the small town of Hollow Creek was buzzing with festivities. Every year, the locals warned the kids to be home before midnight, whispering tales about the Lantern Man, a ghostly figure who roamed the woods just beyond town. No one knew exactly what he did, but everyone claimed he appeared once a yearβon Halloweenβcarrying an old lantern, searching for those who dared stay out too late.
Women Who Defied Traditional Gender Roles
On October 22, 1909, a lesser-known historical woman named Clara Lemlich sparked a pivotal moment in labor history by defying traditional gender roles and leading the movement for workers' rights. At the time, Lemlich, a Ukrainian immigrant and garment worker in New York City, had already endured long hours in unsafe conditions in the garment industry, a field dominated by women who had little say in their working environment.

The tails of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS were a sight to behold. Pictured, C/2023 A3 (TsuchinshanβATLAS) was captured near peak impressiveness last week over the Eastern Sierra Mountains in California, USA. The comet not only showed a bright tail, but a distinct anti-tail pointing in nearly the opposite direction. The globular star cluster M5 can be seen on the right, far in the distance.
The canvas is documented as having arrived at the museum the following month: β[The] work by the painter Bertuch has arrived in good condition.β Presumably it remained in the StΓ€del undamaged during the war, while most of the museumβs collection had already been placed in safekeeping elsewhere in 1939.

The young woman has retreated to the secluded corner of a garden to read her letter. Unnoticed, the viewer shares in this intimate moment. Through the artistβs use of the same pastel shades and dotted brushstrokes, the portrait subject seems to merge with her surroundings. Like many of her fellow female artists, Marie Bertuch fell into oblivion. Having received her artistic education in Zurich, New York, and Paris, she took French Impressionism as her orientation.
