Women Who Defied Traditional Gender Roles
One lesser-known historical woman who defied traditional gender roles and changed history was Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century mathematician and writer. Born in 1815, Ada was the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron, but her mother, determined to steer her away from her father's unpredictable nature, ensured she received a rigorous education in mathematics and scienceβsubjects rarely encouraged for women at the time.
One of the most bone-chilling folklore stories comes from the Asmat people, a traditional and unique tribal culture from the swampy and dense rainforests of Papua, Indonesia. The Asmat, renowned for their incredible woodcarving skills, live in remote villages along the coastal rivers of Papua.
The white inmates had been shouting their intentions to lynch Mr. Wigfall from their cells all morning. Notwithstanding their repeated threats, the prison provided no security, which allowed 100 white prisoners to abduct Mr. Wigfall before hanging him by a rope. No one was held accountable for Mr. Wigfallβs death although it was widely known which prison officials and prisoners were culpable.
Mr. Wigfall was one of at least four documented racial terror lynchings in Wyoming.
