The Norwegian painter Harriet Backer is renowned for her paintings of interiors, which make up the majority of her work, despite her also creating landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. In today's painting, Backer masterfully captures the play of light on the room's colors.
Although the title suggests a blue interior, the room itself isn't actually blue. Instead, the daylight streaming in from the window reflects off surfaces, shaping the room's colors and forms. This blue hue lends a cohesive tone to the scene, while the composition remains vibrant and intricately detailed. The model in the painting is Asta NΓΈrregaard, a fellow artist and friend of Backerβs, and the work was created in Paris, where both women resided at the time.
